When does SSEAT have two s's? When it stands for Smithsonian Science Education Academy for Teachers. Opening my email this afternoon, I was randomly scrolling through when I saw "Congratulations Amy! Energy SSEAT". Obviously, these words meant something to me that others might not understand and this is why.
At the end of February, an email came through from SVSU saying that Dow Chemical Company, along with their partners Jacobs and the Smithsonian Science Education Center would be sponsoring 6 teachers to attend one of three summer academies in Washington DC. After reading through the application process I decided that this was something I was going to try for. The one I found the most interesting was about Innovations and Alternative Energy, which happened to be scheduled during my birthday in July. I answered the questions the best that I could and submitted everything. Fast forward one month to this email informing me that not only was I chosen to go to the Academy on Energy but they would be covering airfare, a hotel right in the capital area for the week, and 2 meals per day. I am beyond excited! Now to just work myself up to flying alone after not having been on a plane in over a decade. Sad, I know, but what a great reason to break the streak.
