Attitude-related Assignment: Monthly, classes will participate in a lesson about various STEM professionals. During the lessons, students will learn about STEM careers via videos, Skype, interviews, guest speakers, or trade books. Each lesson will include a writing component appropriate to the grade level.
By presenting a variety of STEM professions throughout the year, student interest in careers with which they were previously unaware may be sparked. Learning about successful professionals, along with their methods and struggles, should help students understand the roles of effort and attitude in STEM.
Course Work-related/Project Implementation-related Assignment: The project will be embedded within the course work throughout the year. Each month, the Sphero robots will be used in grade-specific projects based on the math and science curriculum in the areas of force and motion, engineering, geometry, measurement, and METS. All projects will include data collection as well as a writing component. Student groups will generate a final project utilizing all collected knowledge as well as a Google presentation on STEM.
By embedding robotics into current curriculum, students will meet state expectations while expanding their skills in problem solving and making real-world connections, a deficit previously seen at the elementary level in Caro. The robotics tasks given throughout the school year will also help address the new engineering standards in science
