After weeks of exploration with our new technology, our students are gearing up for the showcase by deciding which specific projects they will be doing with their technology. With a wide variety of choices, we are excited to speak with each group about their plans and how we can assist them in bringing it altogether.
Already we know there will be video games, constructed computers, obstacle courses for robots, dj turntables just to name a few.

Today we had the amazing privilege of spending some of our grant funding with our friends at Barnes&Noble tonight. They found us such amazing deals that we were not expecting that we were able to not only buy the expected items of Ollies, STEAM littleBits, Synth littleBits, Bloxels, and Ozobots but we were able to expand into Cubelets, IQ Key, Makey Makey, Code Gamer, littleBits Gadgets&Gizmos, as well as a 3-D printer. We can not sat enough about the amazing staff at our Saginaw Barnes&Noble but especially the customer service manager Neena who not only worked with us for weeks on what to order but also took us around the store, exploring the other possibilities for hours. We love you Neena!! We made the front page of the section. It was very nice article about what we are working on and how the Community Foundation, and especially the Janks Fund are making it all happen.
The club is excited to announce they have been chosen to receive a grant through the William and Ruth Janks Fund, a part of the Tuscola County Community Foundation. Additional robotics, computer kits, and devices will be purchased with these funds. The club plans to host a technology DIY showcase in the spring, where club members will demonstrate their coding abilities and technology skills for other students, staff, and community members.
The coding club kicked off November with an exciting event at the Saginaw Barnes and Noble. This event included a demonstration of how students use code.org, an in-store scavenger hunt, cupcake decorating, as well as hands on robotics and makerspace activities. All coding club members, families, friends, and Caro Community Schools staff were specially invited to attend this unique event which was also open to the public. Part fundraiser, part fun, Barnes & Noble donated a portion of each sale made by attendees back to the club. With a constant stream of purple t-shirts throughout the store, over 100 individuals came out during the 5 hour event. Thanks to this overwhelming support, the Schall Coding Club will be able to expand their program through the purchase of several items from their technology wish list. These items include 2 Coder MiP robots, Bloxels, as well as Raspberry Pi and Makey-Makey computer kits.
We are so excited to inform you that the Schall Coding Club will be hosting an event at the Saginaw Barnes & Noble on Tittabawasee Rd., Saturday, November 12th from 12:00 - 5:00 p.m. This event will include demonstrating how we code, an in-store scavenger hunt, and cupcake decorating, as well as hands on robotics and game creation. All coding club members, families, and friends are invited to attend this unique event. It is also open to the public as it will be taking place in the store. Come see us and have a little fun learning what we do from the stars of the show, our coders! Part fundraiser, part fun, Barnes & Noble will donate a portion of each sale made by anyone mentioning the Schall Coding Club back to us. This includes purchases (other than memberships and gift cards) made throughout the store and cafe at any time during the day. Also, purchases made online using the code 12013124 at Barnesandnoble.com from November 12th - 18th will be included. What a great opportunity to do a little early Christmas shopping and support the Schall Coding Club in the process!
Because we just love our kids and want to give them more opportunities, we are working on expanding beyond just the coding programs of last year into more advanced areas. It also doesn't hurt when Barnes & Noble has a sale and coupons. One of our lead teachers just can't turn down a deal. We will be working more this year on writing grants as well as doing some interesting fundraising to be able to afford more things like these. Be on the lookout for updates coming soon about these fundraisers as well as some fun events planned in the community.
Should you be interested in donating items or funds, please let us know. |
